MIWenergía will lead a pilot test of the European PHOENIX project in Spain.

PHOENIX Project

The innovation project "PHOENIX" has started ; a project promoted by the European Union within the Horizon 2020 innovation program in which the participants are MIWenergíaUniversity of Murcia (Spain), SIEMENS, OdinS, Suite5, and seven European technological entities. Last September 25th was held the first meeting to officially start this project, which is expected to last 3 years, ending its research development, pilot tests and testing in September 2023.

PHOENIX Project: A change in the energy role of buildings

At a time when the complex energy paradigm calls for more efficient and sustainable solutions to ensure optimal use of resources, a new framework is needed to enable better management of energy use and the exploitation of electricity infrastructure, facilitating the exploitation of new sources of income and generating new business opportunities.

With the premise of achieving these ambitious objectives, the "PHOENIX" project was born, which seeks to change the role of buildings from unorganized energy consumers to active agents, capable of optimizing their energy consumption, production and storage. This project has a triple purpose:

-Increased energy efficiency

-Maximizing occupant benefits

-Facilitate the operation of the network.

The entities participating in the project will design a complete portfolio of ICT solutions covering all aspects; from hardware and software upgrades, sensor deployment, data analysis and services for both users and energy utilities. PHOENIX will leverage artificial intelligence technologies, cloud computing methods, and a portfolio of ICT solutions to provide the highest level of intelligence to existing buildings and enhance their SRI(Smart Readiness Indicator).

PABLO BARRACHINA : Project Manager at MIWenergía

"Our company is aligned with the innovation and know-how criteria required by this ambitious project. We hope that the pilot test we are going to develop will serve to improve the intelligence of buildings, producing an increase in energy efficiency and offering greater savings for the consumer."

From the conventional building to the Smart Building

Within the PHOENIX, MIWenergía is going to develop one of the pilot tests to be carried out in Spain, included in the five scheduled in total in Europe to be implemented by the group of participating companies, including locations in Ireland, Greece and Sweden.

For the pilot, several conventional buildings (office, business and residential) have been selected to be transformed into Smart buildings capable of acting as active entities, interacting with the grid and optimizing their energy production-consumption ratio.

From the implementation of artificial intelligence with learning capabilities (machine learning), the building will be able to make automatic decisions according to the energy demand and, arranging the storage of excess self-generated energy in an optimal way (provided that the building has it). In addition, the data algorithms will generate knowledge to improve future predictions and thus maximize savings. It is expected that, at the end of the project, these buildings will have a complete package of ICT tools and solutions designed to ensure greater savings in the energy bill of users, and provide a reliable source of data that will allow a thorough analysis to extend this model to other projects and infrastructures.
